The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is a word-class academic institution, and its mission is to develop the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources, in collaboration with the surrounding community.
The research group (leader: Lutz Ahrens) focuses on increased knowledge about chemicals of emerging concern such as PFASs in aquatic and terrestrial environments. The research group has a laboratory with all equipment needed for sample preparation and processing of environmental samples (water, sediment, soil, biota, etc.). The instrumentation includes LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, and high-resolution MS (LC-QToF, LC-Orbitrap) systems. We have also established an EDA-platform comprising an HPLC-fractionator, and LC-Orbitrap system.
Within LIFE SOuRCE, SLU will contribute in the development and assessment of the novel treatment train including foam fractionation technology, phytoremediation, and electrochemical treatment for removal of PFASs. SLU will perform the field trial mainly at the field site Hovgården landfill in Uppsala, Sweden, in close collaboration with Uppsala Water and Waste (UVA). SLU will contribute with sampling and operating of the treatment techniques to optimize and validate the treatment efficiency. In addition, SLU will perform PFAS analysis as well as identification of transformation products for the destructive electrochemical treatment using our existing validated methods. SLU will also contribute communication and dissemination of the results to stakeholders.
